Hyaluronic acid (Hyaluronan) is one of the body’s most essential and fascinating components – simple in structure yet with complex and potent biological functions. For years, it was considered a “passive” ingredient, responsible only for moisture and filling intercellular spaces. Today, it is known to signal vital biological processes, influence cell activity, and regulate inflammation, tissue regeneration, and the immune system.
The body contains about 15 grams of hyaluronic acid – half of which is replaced daily. The highest concentration is found in the skin (approximately 50% of the body’s total hyaluronic acid), where it controls moisture balance and provides essential support to the extracellular matrix of the dermis – the gel-like envelope surrounding collagen and elastin fibers.
What happens to the skin over time?
